Discover Dogs Vancouver Island is pleased to present this resource as a service to both breeders and prospective purchasers. However, we cannot take responsibility for any dealings that result from the use of this directory. CAVEAT EMPTOR!

As the CKC mission statement says "A Dog is a Lifetime Commitment". You should expect a reliable breeder to question you to establish that their puppy is going to in appropriate home. You, as the purchaser, should visit and similarly question the breeder to ensure your prospective puppy is coming from a suitable home.

To be classed as purebred, the dog must be eligible for registration with the Canadian Kennel Club or the Canine Federation of Canada. Under the Animal Pedigree Act, it is illegal to sell a dog as purebred without supplying papers - in the the new owners' name - at NO EXTRA COST.

Take time to visit breeders (call ahead please). Look for good type and temperament in the breeding stock. Look for cleanliness and healthy dogs. I s the breeder anxious to learn all about you, demonstrating a sincere concern for the pup's future? Good breeders will send you home with a wonderful puppy and loads of information. You'll likely stay in touch with him or her too, reporting progress and getting advice. When you have found that ideal breeder, it will be well worth waiting for the next litter.

Your new puppy has a great capacity to learn. What he learns is up to you. If problems are developing, the sooner you look for help, the easier it will be to change the behaviour pattern. The breeder, your veterinarian, kennel clubs and the many books written about dogs are your resources - use them.

Enjoy your puppy!
